Dinner for One
at Hill St Theatre, Edinburgh Fringe Festival
Aug 5th to 30th 2010
‘Same procedure as last year?’
It’s Miss Sophie’s birthday and as every year, she’s holding a dinner party with her closest friends.
Unfortunately her closest friends are all dead …Step forward faithful butler James who, acting out all her guests’ roles, gamely steers the evening through four drink-fuelled courses!
This production is a captivating stage version of the 60’s television comedy classic ‘Dinner for One.’ The Guinness Book of Records cites this as the most frequently repeated TV programme ever but though loved by millions across the world, it is still largely unknown in the UK.
Directed by David Lavender (Aurora Nova/ Komedia) and starring Chris Cresswell (Ra Ra Zoo, Voodoo Vaudeville, Tim Burton’s Charlie & the Chocolate Factory), and international performance artist Mim King (Derevo, Lincoln Centre, NY, Pompidou Centre, Paris, ICA, London, Congress of Visual & Performance Art), this lovingly recreated version offers a wonderful opportunity for the uninitiated and fans alike to experience this show live.

Voodoo Vaudeville has existed as a company since 1999. The first show was at Komedia in Dec 1999, it was an anarchic mix of bravado, brouhaha and art comedy and went on to create a cult following with its kooky comperes Lennie and Morris and their mixture of improvised comedy, puppets, dances and audience participation. Time passed and the emphasis changed; the comperes disappeared, other characters and sensibilities emerged and Voodoo gradually emerged in its present incarnation: a themed theatre cabaret night with its roots in circus, rebel rock music, vaudeville and original form burlesque.
From its inception it has been the brainchild of Chris Cresswell (with inspired interventions from the inimitable Ruth Glaser). Chris has taken it from its anarchic art comedy beginnings to a place where it can fulfil many roles.
Voodoo Vaudeville has performed at a diverse number of events from festival circuit favourites Bestival, Glastonbury and Lost Vagueness to Burlesque shows and the Torture Garden, from the Assembly Rooms to middle scale venues such as Trinity Theatre Tonbridge, Colchester Arts Centre, Udderbelly, Royal Exchange Manchester, whilst retaining its residency at Komedia in Brighton.
Voodoo Vaudeville takes many forms, from a 4 person tight touring show to a collection of renegades let loose on a festival stage.
Voodoo Vaudeville can provide all your needs for a private party, festival or corporate event. We can provide unique variety, circus and cabaret acts to suit any occasion. See our agency page for a full list of acts and possibilities.
